What is a yeast infection?
What causes a yeast infection?
A yeast infection is a vaginal infection caused by an overgrowth
of yeast (candida). It is usually not sexually transmitted although
it can be. It is usually caused by an imbalance of the normal
vaginal flora. The vagina normally contains a certain amount of
yeast and harmless bacteria, but if this balance is interrupted the
yeast may overgrow and cause an inflammation of the vagina
(vaginitis). An imbalance in vaginal flora can be caused by
pregnancy, diabetes, taking birth control pills, taking antibiotics,
and douching. It is also believed that stress, a decreased immune
system and excess vaginal moisture that is often caused by wearing
nylon underwear can contribute to a yeast infection.
What are the symptoms of a yeast infection?
Usually the woman will notice a thick, curdy white discharge. They
could also notice a thinner, milkier white discharge. Moderate to
severe itching will be present. The labia and vulva may be swollen
and red. The skin may be sensitive to touch and the woman may
experience painful intercourse.
How will I know if I have a yeast infection?
How is it treated?
Can it be cured?
Only a doctor or nurse practitioner can tell for sure. If you are
unsure, it is best to see your doctor in order to be diagnosed and
given treatment. The doctor will take a sample of the discharge and
look at it under a microscope to see if candida is present. If it
is, he/she will treat you with a vaginal cream, gel or oral pill
that is used to treat yeast infections. Once you complete the
treatment, you will most likely be cured of the infection. |
