What causes Trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis is a vaginal infection caused by the protozoa Trichomonas vaginalis. It can be found in both men and women. Trichomonas is usually transmitted by sexual intercourse, but can be transmitted by sharing washcloths, towels, bathing suits, underwear or any moist object.

What are the symptoms of Trichomoniasis?

Usually the woman complains of a thin, yellow to gray vaginal discharge that is often foamy and has an unpleasant odor. There may be some itching and redness noted around and inside the vagina. Some women and most men have no symptoms at all. It is important that if your partner is being treated for Trichomoniasis, that you are treated as well.

You may notice any of the symptoms mentioned above, but only a doctor or a nurse practitioner can diagnose and treat trichomoniasis. They will take a sample of the discharge and look at it under a microscope. If trichomonads are present, they will usually prescribe Metronidazole pills or gel for you to take. It is important that if you are taking Metronidazole pills that you abstain from alcohol until 24 hours after you finish the treatment. Once you and your partner(s) finish the prescribed treatment you will be cured of the infection.
